OUTSIDE USER LIABILITY COVERAGE
Use of Venue Facilities
Venues are encouraged to make their facilities available for use by community organizations and groups.
The venues have insurance coverage for damage to property caused by outside organizations, and
liability protection for injuries to members of these groups arising from the negligence of the venue.
User groups and their organizers are not covered under the facility’s liability insurance, and should
therefore obtain liability insurance for their activities. Many outside individuals, organizations and groups
may not carry liability coverage for their operations. Even small groups holding low-risk functions such as
meetings, conferences, 75th birthdays, wedding showers, hall-walkers, square dancing and similar
functions may be vulnerable to lawsuits for injuries that arise out of their activities. Typically, smaller
outside groups – such as pick-up basketball teams, arts and crafts groups, or ad-hoc senior groups
generally do not have insurance.
Individuals or groups running organized or higher risk activities involving arenas or athletic field(s) for
sports, or sponsoring an event/function where tickets are sold, involving alcohol, or where attendance
exceeds 150 persons, face greater risk and should therefore ensure they have liability insurance
coverage to protect themselves from lawsuits for injuries.
Proper risk management dictates that all outside users of facilities should provide evidence of liability
insurance, at a minimum limit of $2,000,000 per occurrence. Beyond having liability coverage in place, an
outside organization should also be naming Mennonite Church British Columbia as Additional Insured to
that coverage, for those activities and events they hold on venue owned property.
Outside groups may have access to insurance through parent organizations such as Boy Scouts, Girl
Guides, etc. Such groups should confirm for themselves whether such insurance exists for them by
consulting their insurance broker. Should a third-party hold their own existing coverage, in order to
protect the interests of the venue, a request should be made to list Mennonite Church British Columbia as
an additional insured on their respective policy for the event in question.
An alternate source of liability insurance is available through the Mennonite Church British Columbia User
Group Portal.
Outside User Liability Portal
The Outside User (Third Party, Facility Renter) has the option to obtain Special Event Liability coverage,
through the use of Mennonite Church British Columbia Outside User Liability Portal. Event liability
coverage policies provide liability coverage to third party users / organizations for use of the venue’s
facilities. These policies will name Mennonite Church British Columbia as additional insured, for the
specific event.
